DUMAGUETE CITY (Jan 26, 2018) – Seventy five third year college students enrolled in Negros Oriental passed the nationwide examination for the Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) offered by the Department of Science & Technology’s Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).
They represent almost half (49%) of the 152 students who took the JLSS qualifying exam held on November 19, 2017 at the Negros Oriental State University Main Campus I, Dumaguete City. The 2017 passing rate has significantly increased compared to the 15% in 2016.
The successful examinees are taking up S&T priority courses in science, engineering, and science/mathematics teaching. 49 of them are currently enrolled in NORSU Main Campus, 11 in NORSU Bais City Campus; 8 in Silliman University; 3 in Foundation University; and 1 each in Maxino College, NORSU Bayawan-Sta. Catalina, Pamplona and Siaton Campuses.
The JLSS program supports the DOST-SEI’s goal of increasing the number of scientists and engineers in the country. The program implements three laws: Republic Act No. 2067 (Merit Scholarship Program), R.A. No. 7687 (Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994), and R.A. No. 10612 (Fast-Tracked S&T Scholarship Act of 2013).
R.A. No. 10612 supports the execution of Section 8 of the K to 12 Law by providing a pool of scholar-graduates which can competently teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the basic education level.
Of the 75 local qualifiers, 38 qualified under R.A. 7687, 26 under R.A. 10612 while 11 under R.A. No. 2067.
As qualifiers, they can enjoy a 2-3 year DOST Scholarship in their current courses. The scholarship entitles them to subsidies for tuition and other school fees, monthly living allowance, book allowance, among others starting June in the academic year 2017-2018.
The DOST Negros Oriental Provincial S&T Center has scheduled the Qualifiers’ Orientation and Contract Signing on February 7, 2018 (9:00 AM-12:00 NN) at the Negros Oriental State University-Main Campus I Gymnasium.
