Department of the Department of Science and Technology 7 (DOST 7) workers held this afternoon, February 15, 2018, DOST S&T Complex in Lahug, Cebu City, their first earthquake drill this year.
The exercise was part of the agency’s disaster preparedness and response simulation exercise pursuant to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan (NDRRMP) requiring “regular disaster preparedness, response and recovery exercises”.
The simulated evacuation was done at exactly two o’clock in the afternoon by first sounding off the alarm system for one minute, signalling the start of the one minute-long imaginary earthquake that hit the building.
During the supposed seismic activity, the workers inside the building ducked or squat under the tables inside the building.
As soon as the earthquake stopped, the workers briskly walked out of the building through their evacuation routes towards an open space serving as the designated assembly area in the DOST premises.
Eliezer Sierra, the designated disaster risk reduction and management officer of the day, thereafter made a head count of the workers who were able to evacuate from disaster area. 71 DOST workers — 39 male and 32 famale — participated in the earthquake drill.
During Evacuation: Workers ducked and cover their heads as they rushed through the evacuation routes (shown in the evacuation diagram) towards the designated assembly area in the DOST compound’s front yard.
