A total of 312 (Female 189, Male 123) Cebu scholar graduates of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region VII are now ready for productive employment in the field of Science and Technology while some are geared to take Masteral and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree under the DOST’s graduate scholarship programs. The DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) held a celebratory send-off for these scholar graduates in an Exit Conference on April 6, 2018, at Parklane Hotel, Cebu City. The exit convention was attended by 260 (Female 160, Male 100) scholar graduates.

Dr. Josette T. Biyo, Director of SEI said the Exit Conference is a way to remind the scholars on their roles and responsibilities in nation building. Dr. Biyo encouraged the scholars to use their capabilities and heighten their sense of patriotism so as “to help address poverty . . . through responding the emerging social issues in the Philippines”.

108 (Female 60, Male 48) of the Scholar Graduates of DOST VII in Cebu Province now has a ready employment with the Department of Education Region VII under R.A No. 10612 titled “An Act Expanding the Coverage of the Science and Technology (S&T) Scholarship Program and Strengthening the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in Secondary Schools” through priority job placement and exemption from regular hiring process. “This is to inspire our scholar-graduates towards a career-path in science teaching,” Dr. Biyo said.

To develop a pool of globally competitive S & T human resources, the DOST-SEI now offers the scholar graduates with three Scholarship Programs for masteral and doctoral degrees, these are the Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP), the Science Education: Capacity Building in Science and Mathematics Education and the Engineering Research for Development and Technology (ERDT). For this year, the DOST-SEI now serves 5,021 scholars for the graduate scholarship programs (Masteral 2,495, Doctoral 1,526).

In response to the call for inclusive national development,  Engr. Edilberto L. Paradela, Regional Director of DOST VII urged the scholars to be of service to the Filipino People and to support the “Ambisyon Natin 2040” Philippine Development Plan. Engr. Paradela said the SEI scholar graduates play a critical role in the realization of the Ambisyon 2040 to make all Filipino families become middle-income families.
