June 12, Cebu City – A multi-material shredder machine, an “Ecobangku” made from upcycled plastic sheets, an eco-based fiberglass from alternative materials, and an arduino-based vital signs monitoring infrared device were among the many innovations unveiled during the opening of the 2019 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE). It was held at the Arctic Room 2 of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
The event was organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) thru the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), DOST Central Visayas and in partnership with Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), this biennial event serves a pre-qualifying round for the 2020 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE). This year’s theme focus on inventions and innovations for sustainable development.
RICE 2019 is one of the main highlights of the Cebu Innovation Expo of the Cebu Business Month 2019. It is designed to boost science creativity and innovation in particular and to stir public interest in science.
82 inventions and innovations are currently featured in the RICE 2019. The Utility Model Category has 5 entries for the Utility Model Category while the Industrial Design Category has 15 entries. On the other hand, DOST VII received 17 entries for the Profession Creative Research Category and 26 entries for the College Creative Category (Sibol Award). There were 19 entries for the High School Creative Category (Sibol Award).
Out of the 82 entries, 3 winners will be chosen for each category. The winners will receive a certificate and cash. The 1st place in each category will represent for Central Visays and will compete for next year’s NICE.
The opening ceremony was graced by DOST Sec. Fortunato T. de la Peña, DOST-TAPI Director Engr. Edgar I. Garcia, CCCI President Virgilio G. Espeleta and DOST VII Assistant Regional Director for Technical Operations Engr. Jesus F. Zamora, Jr.
The viewing public can walk through the exhibits of Bohol Island State University, Cebu Normal University, Cebu Technological University, INCA Plastic Company, Mr. Jesselito V. Baring, Mr. Noel G. Abad, and previous RICE winner Mr. Pedro Delantar.
Also joining the RICE are Ramon M. Durano Sr. Foundation – Science and Technology Education Center (STEC), University of the Philippines Cebu High School Department, STEC Lapu-Lapu City, Silliman University High School Department, Tagbilaran City Science High School, San Remegio National High School, Philippine Science High School – Central Visayas Campus, University of San Carlos, University of San Jose Recoletos, and Velez College.
The viewing of the invention exhibits will run from June 12 to 14. The winners will be announced on the 14th of June.
