The Department of Science and Technology here is now accepting applications for its Undergraduate Scholarship Programs – Republic Act No. 7687 and Merit.
RA 7687, or “Science and Technology Act of 1994”, provides for scholarships to talented and deserving students whole families’ socio-economic status do not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators. Qualifiers must pursue priority fields of study in the basic sciences, engineering, other applied sciences, and science and mathematics teaching. Merit program, on the other hand, is awarded to non-poor students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology.
The said scholarships are open to all graduating senior high school students who are enrolled in public and private schools. Grade 12 students taking up Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) strand are all qualified to apply. Meanwhile, non-STEM strand students must belong to the Top 5% of their class to be able to apply.
Exam passers will enjoy P40,000.00 subsidy for tuition and school fees, receive P10,000.00 book allowance per academic year, and be given P7,000.00 monthly living allowance for the academic year, among other benefits. These scholars have to be enrolled in any of the science and technology priority courses in any SUC or private school identified as Center of Excellence or Center of Development.
Provincial Science and Technology Director Atty. Gilbert R. Arbon lauded the decent passing rate of the province. He encouraged more students especially in the far flung areas to grab this opportunity and apply for the scholarship.
To note, Negros Oriental has 89 qualifiers out of 973 examinees for the 2018 DOST Undergraduate Scholarships held last October 2017 in four exam venues.
Application forms and brochures are available at the Negros Oriental Provincial Science and Technology Center and can also be downloaded from the Science Education Institute (www.sei.dost.gov.ph/downloads) website. DOST will send hard copies of brochures and application forms to all Division Offices of the Department of Education in the province.
Deadline for the submission of application forms along with complete requirements is on August 31, 2018 (Friday) while examination is on October 21, 2018 (Sunday).
