Cebu Technological University-Daanbantayan Campus in Agujo, Daanbantayan, Cebu, is the latest recipient of STARBOOKS in a turnover ceremony attended by school and public officials who welcome the latest addition of standalone digital information kiosk as a big boost to academic instruction and student learning in the town.
With the installation of STARBOOKS in CTU-Daanbantayan Campus, the town received its third digital information kiosk from DOST VII.
STARBOOKS, which stands for Science & Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk Station, is one of the projects of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to improve the quality of education through digital information.
It provides digital access to scientific information without the need for internet connection. Containing hundreds of thousands of digitized science and technology resources in text, video, audio and other formats, this self-contained computer system serves as a one stop shop digital compendium of S&T information.
The ceremony was graced by DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Peña, Cebu 4th District Congressman Benhur Salimbangon, Daanbantayan Mayor Vicente Loot, DOST VII Regional Director Edilberto Paradela, CTU Student Affairs Office Dean Jocelle del Rosario, among other DOST and CTU officials.
Acknowledging the importance of STARBOOKS, Salimbangon recalled the difficulty encountered by provincial students in accessing to digital information. With DOST’s help, students can now have better access to valuable information through STARBOOKS. “If you, students, spend 10 percent of your time in STARBOOKS, you will go a long way in your education”, he said.
Paradela, for his part, said he was glad for being part in addressing the CTU’s vision of providing quality education to the students. “DOST brings the tools and one of these tools is STARBOOKS. With this tool, we can achieve the CTU’s vision.”
He encouraged the students to view the STARBOOKS video presentation on “technopreneurship” to educate themselves in combined use of technology, innovative skills, and entrepreneurial ability in doing business.
He also urged the CTU administration to pool their resources with DOST so STARBOOKS can be set up in all CTU facilities.
For her part, Del Rosario, thanked the DOST VII for bringing STARBOOKS to CTU-Daanbantayan Campus.
“For the past few decades, mankind is advancing towards the unknown realms of science and technology. This advancement is to make life easy and to increase human comfort at home and at work; and every university would like to be an integral part of such betterment”, she said.
Del Rosario pointed out that “STARBOOKS will give us the leading in technology and information in the digital age. We will no longer cram for slow internet connection because this is a standalone library.”
“With our STARBOOKS digital library, research would be made easier with hands-on experience in real time. Our university’s ambition to work at the forefront of technology with the ability to find innovative solutions to the changing needs will now be fulfilled. Thanks to DOST under the leadership of Secretary dela Peña and Director Paradela of DOST VII”, she added.
