Engr. Mario E. de la Peña, the Provincial Director of DOST-PSTO Siquijor together with Jhon Mitchelle H. Wagas of DOST 7 awarded an RxBox to the Rural Health Unit of Siquijor on January 23, 2023.

The Department of Science and Technology Region VII through its arm DOST-PSTO Siquijor rolled out RxBoxes to the Rural Health Units of Larena and Siquijor on January 23, 2023 with the inclusion of a demonstration session of Jhon Mitchelle H. Wagas, a representative from the office of DOST 7.

So far, DOST has completed wrapping up its intervention of RxBoxes to the six municipalities of Siquijor – initially to Enrique Villanueva, Maria, Lazi, and San Juan in 2021, and now to Siquijor and Larena in 2023.  Engr. Mario E. de la Peña, DOST-PSTO Siquijor’s Provincial Director said:  “RxBox is a tool that hits several purposes in one sitting and one setting.  In fact, this is quite revolutionary with its presence, for example, in a local Rural Health Unit which caters mostly to poor residents.”

RxBox is a multi-component program, a package of biomedical device, electronic medical record system, and telemedicine training designed to provide better access to life-saving health care services in isolated and disadvantaged communities nationwide. It is one among the Department of Science and Technology’s efforts for a “Smarter Philippines.”  It is also an ICT (Information and Communication Technology) innovation designed to support the Department of Health’s call for KalusugangPangkalahatan or Universal Health Care.

According to Jo. Florendo B. Lontoc, in his article Unboxing the RxBox dated September 5, 2017, the RxBox “can make many measurements in one sitting and can transmit them as a mobile and Internet device. Where there might be no doctors present, the health worker can make the measurements and send the results via telemedicine to a doctor who can respond immediately on remote. The potentials for faster and cheaper health services are obvious.”

Under the project “Roll-out of 1000 RxBox Telehealth Device in Selected Rural Health Centers in the Philippines,” Mayors Cyrus Vincent M. Calibo of Larena and Richard C. Quezon of Siquijor signed Memorandum of Agreements respectively with Engr. Mario E. de la Peña as a witness for and on behalf of DOST 7’s Regional Director Engr. Jesus F. Zamora, Jr.

The DOST team visited first the Rural Health Unit of Siquijor in the morning and proceeded to the Rural Health Unit of Larena in the afternoon.

Tentacled to this RxBox are Electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure monitor, pulse oximeter, fetal heart monitor, maternal tocometer, and temperature sensor.  It is a life-saving invention of the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

To a patient, an RxBox is a box of hope – for a better monitored life.
