The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) will conduct its 39th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) on July 12-13, 2017 with the theme “Attaining Sustainable Development Goals: Philippine Fisheries and other Aquatic Resources 20/20”.
For this year, NAST PHL adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) to be its overarching theme. The Agricultural Sciences Division, being the host division, agreed to focus on “fisheries” where science is critical. They are also interested in determining how these sectors will impact the achievement of SGDs in the Philippines.
This annual activity of the Academy aims to convene a conference to determine how the Philippines will achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. It serves as the leading forum for the presentation of the results of scientific and policy research.
In line with the thrust of the Duterte administration, NAST PHLwill conduct Regional ScientificMeetings in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. ForVisayas, NAST PHLwill hold the two-day Regional Scientific Meeting in Cebu City on April 18-19 2017. This is in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology Visayas Cluster (Region VI, VII, VIII and NIR).
Invited experts include:Academician (Acd.) Rhodora V. Azanza on “Seaweed Culture”; Dr. Mudjekeewis Santos who will present on “Fishery Harvest and Mariculture”; Supervising Environmetal Management Specialist Ms. Leza A. Acorda-Cuevas from the Environmetal Management Bureau, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to talk about “Clean Water and Sanitation in Fishing”; Academician Gisela Concepcion on “Quality Education for Sustainable Development”; and DENR Biodiversity Management Bureau Executive Director Dr. Vincent Hilomen on “Climate Change and Fisheries”. There will also be a Science Legislative Forumwith the topic “Towards a Blue Economy” with Dr. Ronald Mendoza and Acd. Rafael D. Guerrero III as resource persons.
Two dialogues will also be conducted in the afternoon of the second day. The first will be a Dialogue on Disaster Resiliency: Business Continuity to be led by DOST Undersecretary for Risk Reduction and Management Dr. Renato Solidum. This will be followed by a Dialogue on Emerging Diseases in Shrimp Culture led by Dr. Rolando Pakingking, Jr. and Ms. Roselyn Usero.
Policy recommendations on appropriate interventions as agreed upon during the plenary sessions will be submitted to thePhilippine government and the private sector. More than 500 scientists and researchers from all over Visayas are expected to attend this activity.
