Princess Sofia B. McDonough, a Grade VI learner of Siquijor Integrated School (SIS) of Siquijor, Siquijor quipped: “The orientation was really nice. I’m thankful because I can now read scientific information. Thank you and I love you (DOST).”
On January 6, 2023, the Department of Science and Technology of Siquijor (DOST-SIQUIJOR), right after installing STARBOOKS digital library in SIS, conducted orientation and training of its Grade V and Grade VI learners. Nathalia Tabilon and Macbeth S. Dal facilitated the said program.
Nathalia Tabilon, addressing the learners, noted: “STARBOOKS is a great opportunity for you of young minds to take the great adventure of discovering the wonder of what is around us through science and technology. STARBOOKS is such a window for more learning.”
“STARBOOKS or the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated KioskS is a stand-alone information source designed to reach those with limited or no access to S&T information resources. The project aims to provide STI (Science, Technology, and Innovation)-based content in various formats to students and other constituents in geographically-isolated and economically-challenged schools and communities throughout the country. STARBOOKS contains hundreds of thousands of digitized science and technology resources in various formats (text and video/audio) placed in specially design “pods” set in a user-friendly interface.”
SIS is among one of the schools marked as beneficiaries of DOST’s STARBOOKS for 2023. Edjaly D. Bation, a teacher of SIS, said: “I know that this project will greatly help us teachers in the delivery of instruction. I am grateful that DOST has considered SIS as its beneficiary.”
DOST-SIQUIJOR’s Provincial Director Engr. Mario E. de la Peña said: “DOST is a lobbyist not only for information, but for reliable scientific information. Being engaging and dynamic, STARBOOKS will surely begin to create a culture of reading here in SIS.”
“It is really good. It is a good activity,” as GB B. Jauculan, a Grade VI learner of SIS would make of his new acquaintance with STARBOOKS.
