Cebu City, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd)-Cebu City Division, CID-LRMDS conducted a 3-day capability building for teacher-librarians entitled “Managing Public School Library in the 21st Century Education (MaPSLib in the 21st Ed)” on May 3-5, 2017 at Hotel Asia, Cebu City.

One of the highlighted topics in the said seminar workshop was “Getting to know more about DOST STARBOOKS: The Philippines First Digital Science Library”. Ms. Maria Arleen Arnejo, Department of Science and Technology Regional Office VII (DOST VII) Librarian designate introduced the Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosks (STARBOOKS) to about 100 eager participants along with an outline of how to avail the system.  Dubbed as “LIBRARY IN A BOX”, STARBOOKS contains thousands of digitized science and technology resources in various formats (text and video/audio) which are placed in specially designed “pods” set in a user-friendly interface. Ms. Venus Retuya, STARBOOKS Deployment Officer of DOST VII presented the technical overview and demonstration of the STARBOOKS with the assistance of Mr. Mark Xandro Yana, DOST PSTC Cebu Staff. To cap the session, participants were given time to explore and experience STARBOOKS.

AS of February 2017, there are 1,292 installed STARBOOKS nationwide and 137 of which are in Central Visayas.
