The Department of Science and Technology with its implementing agency Siquijor State College distributed farm implements to members of Liloan-Saguing Farmers and Fishers Association (LISAFFA) of Maria, Siquijor and Triple M Farmers Association (Triple M) of Lazi, Siquijor last Saturday November 5, 2022.

Both associations have been beneficiaries of DOST’s Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) program with a focus on peanut production.

The distribution was preceded with a monthly meeting conducted by the Extension Department of Siquijor State College headed by the Project Leader Dr. Philna S. Palongpalong, with Extension Expert Lowel B. Salve, Technical Expert Edgardo G. Anhao, and Technical Representatives Azineth S. Tancogo and Orlalin B. Gallendo.

Come next week of November 2022, the newly-grown peanuts are scheduled for fertilization.

As far as LISAFFA is concerned, 38 households received each a package of shovel, rake, and basin or pail.  For Triple M, 48 households received each the same.

In totality, DOST through SSC, has already provided LISAFFA with 1,000 kilos of unshelled peanuts, 2 pieces plastic drum (200 liters), 3 units steel wheel barrow, 3 units general purpose hand trolley, 75  sacks vermicast, 30 bottles EM-1 peanut inoculant (1 liter), 35 sacks fertilizer (14-14-14), 50 sacks chicken dung, 2 rolls straw, 4 pieces shovel, 4 pieces plastic pail, 4 pieces plastic basin, and 8 units rake.

For Triple M, it has received 1,000 kilos of unshelled peanuts, 2 pieces plastic drum (200 liters), 3 units steel wheel barrow, 3 units general purpose hand trolley, 75  sacks vermicast, 30 bottles EM-1 peanut inoculant (1 liter), 35 sacks fertilizer (14-14-14), 50 sacks chicken dung, 2 rolls straw, 5 pieces shovel, 3 pieces plastic pail, 5 pieces plastic basin, and 2 units rake.

DOST VII, DOST PSTC Siquijor, and SSC remain working to achieve the goal of producing peanuts in the province of Siquijor – sustainably and for the prospect of creating a value chain from peanuts.

New tools for the farmers, in-formed work, and revived energy – all for what is essentially empowerment for DOST-CEST assisted communities. (Jose Aldous Rubi Arbon II, SRA-IO)
